Meet Your Neighbor: Leigh Sabinsky

“I grew up in Smithtown, NY and started dancing at the age of 4. I was lucky enough to continue my passion of dance, as I went to Penn State University and competed on the Penn State Lionettes Dance Team all 4 years of my college career! While at Penn State, I got heavily involved volunteering at an organization called Penn State THON, which raises money for children with pediatric cancer. When I moved to Queens and became a 3rd grade teacher on Long Island, I felt a void in my life after dedicating much of my time to Penn State THON. That is when I got involved with Queens Community House! Over the past year as a volunteer for the Friendly Visiting program, I spent my time getting to know the wonderful and inspiring woman I was paired with. Due to the pandemic, we could not meet in person, but spent our time forming a bond through weekly phone calls. She always made me laugh and put a smile on my face. She showed a true interest in my daily life of teaching, wedding planning, and travelling, and showed gratitude for always giving her a call. She unfortunately passed away early this month. She will be truly missed. I will always treasure the bond we formed and deeply miss our weekly phone calls.”
