Meet Your Neighbor: Alexandria Sumpter-Delves

“I’ve been a resident of Queens for 38 years. I love Queens because there’s just this strong sense of community, even more so for me because my husband runs a dojo here.

“I applied for the Queens Connect Director position because I thought it complemented my 15 years of youth development experience. I believe in programs like the Young Adult Food Sector Employment Initiative that support underserved youth – they have so much to offer the world.

“Being the Director of this program was a challenge for me because of the culinary aspect, but I wanted to try and tackle that. Now, every day is a reward because young people call us to say they got hired in the food sector. There are limited opportunities within the workforce now because adults occupy roles that were traditionally filled by youth. With this food sector training program, we’ve carved a niche for them to obtain long-term employment and fulfill their career goals.”
