Meet Your Neighbor: Vic Liu

"I joined QCH's Pomonok Older Adult Center after retiring from a lifelong career. With more free time and a longer life expectancy ahead, I often wondered how to spend my days meaningfully and joyfully. Thankfully, I found the Center through a friend, and it was a place full of energy, learning, and connection.

The Center offers everything I was looking for: social interaction, congregate meals, physical exercise, holiday celebrations, outings to shows, and opportunities to upgrade my technical skills. I’ve taken classes on using computers, iPads, smartphones, and Microsoft applications, things that keep me active and up-to-date.

I work out twice a week, which has significantly improved my strength and endurance. I’ve made new friends, and we often go out to eat, walk in the park, and even went on a cruise to Canada together last year.

The Center feels like my second home. I even joke that this is my 'job' after retirement—and I love it! Recently, I had the honor of leading a conversational English group for non-English-speaking immigrants, which has been a meaningful way to give back. One of the most unexpected joys has been when I discovered oil painting. My very first project was ambitious: a portrait! Since then, I’ve painted around 20 portraits of family and friends. Their compliments encouraged me to keep going.

As a senior, I’m deeply grateful for all the programs and support provided by Queens Community House at Pomonok. They make every day fulfilling and full of purpose."
