YOUTHBUILD CONSTRUCTION INSTRUCTOR

Queens Community House (QCH) is seeking a qualified Construction Instructor for our YouthBuild program with a strong commitment to teaching and safety. The YouthBuild program engages out-of-school, low-income youth ages 16-24 and provides an alternative education and employment pathway that enables participants to obtain a high school equivalency diploma, advance toward post-secondary education or career-oriented employment and take responsibility for their families and communities. Under limited supervision of the YouthBuild Program Director the Construction Instructor will perform the following functions:
- Teach the nationally-recognized construction certification curriculum to trainees using prescribed materials.
- Administer module tests and track and report participant results, providing remedial help where needed.
- Teach participants construction skills including: demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, and finish carpentry.
- Ensure construction lab and work site safety, modeling and reinforcing proper constructions techniques and all trained safety procedures including proper use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
- Support the academic and leadership goals of the program by incorporating both into classroom learning, construction lab, and building work site activities whenever possible.
- Provide supervision of the academic and/or leadership components of the program when needed. Work with the HS Equivalency instructor to incorporate construction concepts into academic learning.
- Initiate and schedule OSHA, first aid, and CPR training for all participants.
- Remedy any potential safety hazards identified in the MOU prior to start of work.
- Attend periodic YouthBuild partner meetings to identify challenges and keep lines of communication open.
- Coordinate with the work site partner project manager to develop a detailed construction plan and schedule, material needs, and other information as required for the work site activities.
- Assist partner(s) in determination of labor and resource requirements for projects as needed.
- Set work site behavioral standards and model appropriate behavior and methods of addressing problems at the construction site and in the classroom.
- Lead and supervise students in community service projects as requested.
- Keep YouthBuild Program Director informed of construction progress and challenges.
- Attend weekly case management meetings, providing observations of participant’s strengths and weaknesses and input on individualized plans for improvement.
- Assist with vocational counseling and the development of leadership skills in conjunction with other staff.
- Coordinate with other staff members to consistently enforce YouthBuild and QCH policies.
- Assist in participant follow-up activities including, portfolio development, job placement, post-secondary education exploration and on-going vocational training and internship/apprenticeship opportunities.
- Participate as part of the YouthBuild team in program planning, including Orientation and follow-up activities.
- Coordinate with classroom/construction lab Site Coordinator to solve site logistical issues.
- Keep construction certification report up-to-date, provide required certifications statistics.
- Records Clerk on a quarterly basis, and apply for participant certifications upon completion of the curriculum.
- Complete daily activity log and construction report section of weekly report form in a timely manner.
- Maintain inventory of all tools and equipment used on the job daily.
- Attend additional meetings and trainings as required.
- All other duties as assigned.
- Already have or be able and willing to acquire Associates of Applied Science in Construction Management within 2 years
- At least three (3) years’ (6,000 site hours) experience in hands-on residential construction or remodeling. Experience as a general contractor.
- OSHA 30 certification required; certified OSHA trainer (or ability to obtain) preferred
- Experience teaching, training, or working with a diverse at risk (socially and academically) youth population. Ability to teach utilizing a provided curriculum and teach the following topic areas: Building and Construction materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures; Tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance; Management and leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources; Safety and security procedures, and strategies to promote effective security operations for the protection of staff, program participants; data, and property; Education and Training, principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instructing individuals and groups
- Ability to utilize effective teaching methods including: assertive and affirming listening skills; effectively conveying concepts; selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures that adapt to student’s strengths when learning; good judgement and decision-making; ability to speak and write in a way that meets the needs of the audience; critical thinking skills; problem solving skills.
- Extraordinary attention to detail and thoroughness in completing work tasks; being reliable, responsible, and dependable, and fulfilling obligations with integrity, honesty and knowledge of professional ethics.
- Pleasant with others on the job and displaying a good-natured, cooperative attitude; maintaining composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger, and avoiding aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations; accepting criticism and dealing calmly and effectively with high stress situations; conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry heavy objects. Must be able to exert yourself physically over long periods of time while maintaining ability to work.
- Speaking clearly so others can understand you and the information you are communicating; will be required to convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately; ability to talk in front of groups and provide information to supervisors, co-workers, direct reports, and external partners via telephone, writing form, e-mail, or in person.
- The ability to see and hear details at a distance and at close range in order to maintain safe environments; will be required to read papers, books, and to operate audio-visual, office equipment and tools;
- 40% of the time, Environmentally controlled conditions, working in an office or shared office setting, working with others in a group or team; contact with others;
- 60% of the time, teaching and training youth basic construction knowledge in the classroom, construction lab, and work site. Personal protective gear must be worn; exposure to some hazardous, dangerous, and noisy conditions; exposed to all types of weather; may be required to work in hot, wet, cold, or other significantly unpleasant conditions
This position is available immediately. Queens Community House offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and a comprehensive benefits package. STATUS: Full-Time; Non-Exempt
SALARY: $50,000; excellent benefits
SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm
