Alternative High Schools

QCH is recognized for its expertise in helping older youth, who have struggled in traditional high schools, to attain high school diplomas and to go on to succeed in college and employment. We currently operate five alternative schools in partnership with the NYC Department of Education: three Transfer Schools and two Young Adult Borough Centers (YABCs).

Transfer Schools are small, academically rigorous, full-time high schools designed to re-engage students who have dropped out or who have fallen behind in credits at their previous schools.

Young Adult Borough Centers (or YABCs) are evening academic programs designed for high school students who are behind in credits, considering dropping out, or, because of adult responsibilities in the day time, are unable to take classes at their former high school. Take a look at the video below on how we are changing lives at our YABC at John Adams High School.

All five of our high schools are Learning to Work (LTW) sites. LTW programs offer academic and emotional support, counseling, career/college exploration and preparation, and paid internships that help students earn an income, gain professional experience, and test out potential career interests.

College Access and Success Program (CASP)

The College Access & Success Program (CASP) supports students through personal barriers while achieving an Associate’s Degree at LaGuardia or Queensborough Community College. CASP provides students with individualized counseling to guide them through the college application process. Our goal is to connect students to resources that will empower them as advocates of higher education.
