Meet Your Neighbor: Tseten Shakya

When I was in middle school, my mom told me about a program that she felt my cousin and I should join to gain more experience. I was skeptical at first, but after my first Access for Young Women (AFYW) session, I've been a participant since! I have been in the program since the 6th grade, and now I’m about to graduate high school.

AFYW is such an accepting and open community. It was refreshing to find a safe space where I could make friends and have fun! My favorite memory would have to be my first AFYW conference. My group and I sang Bruno Mars’ song, “Count On Me”, for our presentation on healthy relationships. I’ll never forget how accomplished I felt next to my group members!

AFYW has not only helped me build my confidence, but I’ve also learned what it takes to become a good leader while focusing on important issues. AFYW has definitely shaped me into the person I am today.
