Queens Community House (QCH) is seeking a qualified Advocate Counselor at Queens Satellite High School for Opportunity who will provide comprehensive support services to program participants as required by contract and appropriate to their needs. The Advocate Counselor will also prepare students for positions in internships and job openings through the provision of one-on-one tutelage and the facilitation of vocational skills, college awareness, post-secondary planning and workshops for the students in the Learning to Work (LTW) program. LTW programs are an alternative pathway to graduation for youth 16 years and older, the program is funded by NYC Department of Education and implemented in collaboration with Queens Satellite High School for Opportunity DOE staff. We are committed to providing support services to students who desire to pursue their high school diploma. Students in the LTW program are given the opportunity to participate 10 hours per week in a paid internship. This position reports to the Program Director.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Welcome students and take daily school attendance to foster positive engagement.
  • Conduct on-going attendance outreach, including home visits and work site visits.
  • Counsel each student on the creation and implementation of a post-secondary plan for college, training or employment within 60 days of enrollment.
  • Providing a minimum of (2) individual sessions per month of each student; one on academic progress and the other on career advisement.
  • Conduct advisory groups by facilitating curricula and discussion in the following content areas: job readiness, career exploration, conflict resolution, political education, mediation, leadership, community service, youth employment, gender groups, psychoeducation, etc.
  • Maintain case files and record all student interventions weekly in Google forms.
  • Maintain on-going communication with parents and guardians of participants to support positive outcomes for the students’ and assist families with identified needs.
  • Connect students to outside resources and make appropriate referrals if needed.
  • Begin the CUNY and FAFSA application process with each eligible student on caseload. 
  • Refer students who have applied to LGCC, QCC, or BMCC as their 1st or 2nd choice on their CUNY application to the CASP case manager.
  • Introduce the internship program and refer appropriate students to the Internship Coordinator.
  • Check–in with internship students to make sure they are balancing school/work responsibilities.
  • Meet weekly with immediate supervisor and come prepared with agenda items to discuss.
  • Facilitate communication and structured meetings between students and teachers.
  • Ensure that required follow-up is made to graduates in the month of July and February.
  • Attend mandatory agency quarterly staff meetings and parent-teacher conferences
  • Work collaboratively with DOE staff.
  • Take initiative and demonstrate flexibility in responding to school needs.


  • Bachelor’s Degree required preferably in social work or related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with youth preferably in a NYC high school setting.
  • Demonstrated attendance and punctuality in meeting required schedule.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, multi-tasking and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate discretion.
  • Excellent computer skills with various programs and willingness to learn new ones.

STATUS: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

SALARY: Mid to High $30K range

SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 8 am-4 pm, with flexibility for events, home visits, meeting, and training time
