Action Group

Our Immigrant Services in Jackson Heights connect with nearly 2,500 immigrants who enroll to learn English and to improve their lives and those of their families. Our Action Group was formed from this body of students. Together with other community neighbors, the Action Group engages in organizing to overcome challenges facing individuals and the community, and to provide support to each other in making social, political, and economic change. This is achieved through popular education, base-building, leadership development, campaigns to change policy, working with coalitions, and more!

Parks and Green Space:
We are working with the Jackson Heights Beautification Group's Friends of Travers Park to promote cross-cultural and inter-generational communication, learning, and enjoyment through activities in Travers Park, and advocating for more park and green space in the neighborhood, including expansion of Travers Park. We are also participating in a project to create a Green Agenda for Jackson Heights conducting outreach for community forums and working together to make Jackson Heights a healthier, green community for all its residents.

Immigration Reform Campaign:
Alongside coalition organizations that also support the rights of immigrants, we are in favor of an immigration reform that ends detentions and deportations, provides a path to citizenship for those living here, reasonable legal channels for future immigrants, family reunification, protections for all workers, and an end to deaths at the border.

Affordable Housing: Together with Queens for Affordable Housing, we continue to advocate for more options for affordable housing in new developments in Queens and support the rights of tenants through outreach and legislation.

Training & Leadership Development: We hold Know Your Rights trainings on topics such as tenants' rights, financial justice, workers’ rights and more. We also hold skill-building and consciousness-raising trainings and workshops
