Caregiver Support

Caring for anolder family member, friend or neighbor, can be as challenging as it is important. Often, caregivers, juggling jobs and family needs along with caring for an elderly person, may feel as though they are carrying the weight of the world on their own shoulders, and are failing at everything. This can lead to caretaker ”burnout,” being overwhelmed by feelings of stress, guilt and depression.

The first step out of thisloneliness is realizing that you are not alone; the second is reaching out for help. Queens Community House recognizes and honors the invaluable, often onerous, help that you are providing, and has developed a number of services to assist you. They are available to caregivers throughout Queens.

Our support services include the following:

  • Information and referral to different community-based services that might be available to help
  • Individual counseling to assist you to identify problems, develop coping mechanisms and seek concrete solutions
  • Support groups where you can share your problems as they arise with other caregivers. Peer support and sharing can help you decrease a sense of isolation, and learn techniques that might be working for others
  • Education through special lectures and workshops offered by various experts in different areas, including attorneys, physicians, nutritionists and other professionals
  • Long-term care planning to identify the costs, options and benefits of various existing services and how they might apply to your individual needs and situation
  • Relief and respite through enrolling your loved one in our Social Adult Day Services Program.
